Lazzarini: Gaza aid does not match the scale of the humanitarian tragedy

GAZA, May 31 (YPA) – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, confirmed that the volume of aid sent to Gaza is not commensurate with the scale of the humanitarian tragedy witnessed in the Strip.

Lazzarini explained in a press statement, on Saturday, that “The famine in Gaza can be stopped if there is political will, and what we are asking for is not impossible, calling for enabling the United Nations to fulfill its role in providing assistance to the needy population and protecting their dignity.”

On Friday, he announced that 900 aid trucks had entered Gaza over the past two weeks, representing only 10% of the daily needs of the Strip’s residents, adding that stopping the current famine in Gaza requires political will.

Lazzarini called for allowing UN agencies and organizations working in the humanitarian field to resume their work in Gaza, after the entry of aid trucks was halted since March 2.

The UN official also explained that during the previous ceasefire, UNRWA and other organizations succeeded in bringing in 600-800 aid trucks daily.
