BOGOTA, May 27 (YPA) – Colombia has issued a decree to appoint, Jorge Iván Ospina, a former mayor of Cali and close confidant of President Gustavo Petro, as its first ambassador to the Palestinian territories.
According to the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, decree was made after the approval of Palestinian authorities earlier this month, according to a decree signed by Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia.
The left-wing president had announced in mid-2024 the severing of diplomatic relations with the occupation and accused Netanyahu’s government of carrying out “genocide” in Gaza.
A year ago, he announced the opening of a Colombian embassy in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
Ospina is a former mayor of Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, and has been affiliated with leftist movements. He is the son of Ivan Marino Ospina, a former leader of the M-19 armed group, of which President Petro was also a member.
