Islah Party’s leader threatens to escalate against UAE-backed factions in Socotra

SOCOTRA, May 24 (YPA) – The leader of the Socotra archipelago’s sheikhs, Issa Salem bin Yaqut, who is loyal to the Islah Party, called on UAE forces to release human rights activist Nawar Shaaban, who has been held in one of the island’s prisons since last Tuesday.

In a post on the X platform, bin Yaqut warned the UAE factions and their affiliated authorities against harassing activists, accusing them of suppressing freedom of expression and targeting Shaaban.

He demanded Shaaban’s immediate release, threatening to escalate the situation if his detention continued.

It is noteworthy that the UAE-backed governor of Socotra, Raafat al-Thaqali, ordered Shaaban’s arrest after he published documents related to the court rulings of the commander of the “Special Forces,” Mohammed Murshid. Shaaban demanded the disclosure of those involved in the recent killing of a resident from Hodeida province.
