SANAA, May 24 (YPA) – The judicial authorities in the Republic of Peru announced the opening of a formal criminal investigation against an Israeli soldier on charges of committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, following a legal complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Human Rights Foundation.
The complaint was filed by prominent Peruvian lawyer Julio Cesar Arbizo Gonzalez, who represents the foundation, and included documented audio and video evidence and open intelligence sources, accusing the soldier, who served in the combat engineering corps of the occupation army, of “direct participation in the destruction of civilian neighborhoods in Gaza during the military aggression between 2023 and 2024.”
This step is an important development in the context of the principle of universal jurisdiction, as the investigation confirms Peru’s commitment to international humanitarian law and sends a clear message that perpetrators of international crimes will not enjoy protection simply because they are outside conflict zones.
