Implications of WFP’s announcement that its food stocks in Gaza have run out

GAZA, April 29 (YPA) – The World Food Programme’s (WFP) announcement that its food stocks in Gaza have run out and its warnings of an impending famine represent a dangerous development that threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and has broad humanitarian, political, and security implications, most notably:

The WFP announced in a statement on its official website last Friday that it had distributed the last remaining food stocks to charitable kitchens in the Gaza Strip. The program indicated that food rations available at the charitable kitchens in Gaza are expected to run out in the next few days.

Urgent Humanitarian Implications:

– Mass Hunger Catastrophe: Gaza is almost entirely dependent on foreign aid due to the years-long Israeli blockade, and the depletion of World Food Program stocks means more than 2.2 million people (including children, women, and the elderly) are deprived of a minimum of one meal per day.

 – Worsening Malnutrition: Food shortages will lead to an increase in cases of acute malnutrition, especially among children, which could cause death or permanent health damage (such as stunting and weakened immunity).

 – Collapse of the Healthcare System: Hospitals in Gaza are already suffering from shortages of medicines and fuel, and the increasing number of patients due to hunger will overwhelm their limited capacity.

Future Implications:

– Forced Migration: If the war on Gaza continues and famine worsens with the continued Israeli blockade, thousands of Palestinians may be forced to flee to Egypt or Jordan, creating new refugee crises. This is what the Israeli occupation is seeking with support and encouragement from the United States.

 – Collapse of the Local Economy: The destruction of Gaza’s agricultural infrastructure (such as greenhouses) means that recovery, even after the war, will be slow.

– Spread of Disease: Hunger and a lack of clean drinking water could lead to outbreaks of diseases such as cholera or typhoid.

Possible Scenarios:

Worst-case scenario: Continued food aid shortages will raise the death rate from starvation to hundreds per day (as happened in the Horn of Africa famines).

Conclusion:

The WFP announcement represents a final warning bell before an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in modern times. Urgent action is required from donor countries to increase funding and pressure Israel to allow unimpeded access for aid. The United Nations must also adopt binding resolutions to stop the use of starvation as a weapon of war.

Otherwise, Gaza will turn into a mass grave, not just because of the bombs, but because of the systematic starvation policy.
