GAZA, April 14 (YPA) – Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, affirmed The situation in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated to worse levels.
In a news statement on the sidelines of the participation in the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, he noted that humanitarian conditions in the Strip have reached unbearable levels in light of the ongoing Israeli bombardment.
Lazzarini said: “The situation in Gaza is worse than ever. There is no safe place in the Strip, and we witness daily intense Israeli bombardment, worsening famine and epidemics, as well as inhumane living conditions.”
The UNRWA official added that Israel’s killing of 15 ambulance and civil defense personnel at the end of March represents a dangerous escalation, considering that “targeting these individuals, whose identities were known, constituted a clear violation of international humanitarian law,” calling for an independent international investigation to punish those responsible for these crimes.
He noted that humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip has run out, following a month-long closure of the crossings, emphasizing that UNRWA continues to call for the urgent lifting of the blockade on the Strip and the opening of humanitarian aid.
Lazzarini said that the perpetrators of these crimes have not yet been held accountable, despite the worsening tragic conditions in the Strip. “The Palestinian journalists who cover these events daily are extremely courageous, and we need to support independent journalism in Gaza.”
