Migrant worker dies during World Cup stadium construction in Saudi Arabia

LONDON, March 22 (YPA) – A migrant worker died while building one of the new stadiums designated for the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

A Guardian report revealed that Mohammed Arshad, a Pakistani national, died after falling from an upper floor during construction work on the Aramco Stadium in the eastern city of Khobar on March 12, according to sources familiar with the incident.

Arshad’s death is the first known death of a migrant worker linked to Saudi Arabia’s preparations for the 2034 World Cup.

This came just three months after FIFA announced the Kingdom had won the right to host the tournament.

Human rights groups warned of the risks migrant workers who may face at tournament construction sites, with Amnesty International stating that “migrant workers will be exploited and there will be many deaths.”
