DOHA, Dec. 23 (YPA) – Qatar’s energy minister, Saad al-Kaabi, said his country would stop shipping gas to the European Union if its member states strictly enforced a new law on labor and environmental damage.
Under a law on due diligence and corporate sustainability approved this year, large companies operating in the EU are required to check whether their supply chains use forced labour or cause environmental damage, and take action if they find that they do.
“If it means losing five percent of my revenues because of selling to Europe, I will not sell to Europe. I am serious about that,” Al-Kaabi told the Financial Times in an interview published on Sunday. “Five percent of Qatar Energy’s revenues means five percent of Qatar’s revenues.”
Sanctions include fines of up to five percent of total global revenue.
