ANKARA, Dec. 22 (YPA) – The Turkish security services arrested journalist Özlem Gürses after being compared action in Syria as ISIS.
The journalist, Özlem Gürses, 20, had detained as part of an investigation into remarks that she likened, during a live broadcast on her YouTube channel, the Turkish army and the so-called Syrian National Army to the structure of the terrorist organization ISIS.
According to the Sabah newspaper, Gürses was arrested as part of an official investigation, where she was charged with “defaming the institutions and agencies of the Turkish regime” and “publicly spreading misleading information.”
This came amid increasing repression against journalists opposing the policies of the ruling Erdogan regime in Turkey, especially in recent years, amid local and international criticism regarding the impact of censorship on freedom of the press and rights of expression.
