Shabwa teachers declare strike after being attacked by pro-UAE factions

SHABWA, Nov. 20 (YPA) – Primary and secondary school teachers in Shabwa province, eastern Yemen, on Wednesday announced a strike starting tomorrow, Thursday.

This came after attacks on teachers by UAE-funded “Shabwani Elite” factions during a protest demanding improved financial dues for teachers in Ataq, similar to those in neighboring provinces.

Local sources in the city of Ataq, the center of Shabwa, reported that UAE-affiliated gunmen attacked teachers under the pretext that the latter were “implementing an agenda of the Islah Party to disturb security in Shabwa.”

Teachers in Shabwa are demanding a monthly incentive of 30,000 riyals from the local authority, similar to other provinces in southern and eastern Yemen.

Citizens in areas controlled by the Saudi-led coalition suffer from the low purchasing power of the Yemeni riyal, which has lost nearly 600% of its value since 2017.
