ALQUDS, Oct. 31 (YPA) – Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox (or Haredi) Jews demonstrated on Thursday in front of a recruitment headquarters in the occupied city of al-Quds to reject compulsory recruitment.
During the demonstration, the protesters clashed with Israeli occupation police who tried to disperse and attest many them.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that the Haredi protesters, who refused to be conscripted into the occupation army, clashed with police officers and described them as “Nazis.”
The protest came a day after Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi called for an increase in the number of soldiers in the army from the reserve and regular forces.
On July 29, the occupation army issued military service summons for 1,000 Haredi, in a move aimed at strengthening the army’s ranks.
It was supposed to recruit 3,000 Haredi youth in the first phase in 2024, as part of a plan to recruit 4,800 in 2025 and 2026, but very few of them responded to the recruitment orders.
On June 25, the Israeli Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in Israel, decided to oblige Haredi youth to enlist in the army and to prevent financial aid from religious institutions whose students refuse military service.
