“Flamingo Revolution” in Albania: Protests continue for 100 days against Kushner’s nature reserve project

TIRANA, Sept. 09 (YPA) – For the 100th consecutive day, Albanian opponents continued to demonstrate in the capital, Tirana, against a luxury real estate development project in a nature reserve on Lake Narta in the Vjösa River delta.

The project, spearheaded by a company linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, aims to build hotels, villa complexes, and entertainment facilities in Zvernik Bay and Sazan Island.

Protesters held banners reading “Albania is not for sale” and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing him of corruption for supporting the project.

Environmental groups have warned that the development will cause permanent damage to the fragile ecosystem of the Vjösa River delta on the Adriatic coast, a breeding ground for flamingos and herons. Albanian media have dubbed the movement the “Flamingo Revolution.”

Although no building permit has yet been issued, construction equipment arrived at the proposed site in late May, sparking the ongoing protests.
