Oil pollution threatens Aden’s coast environment

ADEN, Aug. 20 (YPA) – The coasts of the city of Aden in southern Yemen were exposed to serious oil pollution as a result of oil tanker leaks in the port of Aden.

According to a statement Monday by ‘the Environmental Protection Authority’ in Aden, the oil pollution extends along the coast of Al-Maharam area in Al-Buraiqa District, west of the city of Aden, by about 300 meters from the coastal strip of the region.

The authority stated that the recurrence of coastal pollution is due to the entry of seawater into the openings on the deck of the tanker “Coral,” located in the port of Aden, and the oils exiting from it in batches.

This dangerous pollution comes in conjunction with the state of tides and changes in sea level, and there are still many dilapidated ships in the port’s hook-throwing area, according to the authority.

The Environmental Protection Authority called for urgent action by the concerned authorities to expedite the unloading of oil materials stored in tanks and engines of dilapidated ships inside the port and to float these ships and take them out to the vicinity of the port for dismantling.

The authority also stressed the importance of obliging the owners of dilapidated ships causing pollution to address environmental damage in accordance with the provisions of the law.
