Algeria withdraws its ambassador to France

WORLD, July 30 (YPA) – Algeria has decided to withdraw its ambassador from France following the French President Emmanuel Macron’s endorsement of Morocco’s stance on autonomy as the sole solution to the Western Sahara conflict.

In a statement today, Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad confirmed that “the French government has made a clear and unequivocal endorsement of the colonial reality imposed in the Western Sahara region.”

The ministry explained that this step, which no previous French government had taken, was undertaken by the current government with significant disregard and recklessness, without a thoughtful assessment of the resulting consequences.

The ministry noted that by endorsing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole solution under “alleged” Moroccan sovereignty, the French government is accused of “violating international legitimacy and denying the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”

It added that the stance contradicts the UN’s ongoing efforts to complete the “decolonization of Western Sahara and evades France’s responsibilities as a permanent UN Security Council member.”
