WFP suspends food distribution from US pier off Gaza

GAZA, June 10 (YPA) -World Food Programme Executive Director Cindy McCain said that the WFP has “temporarily suspended” the distribution of humanitarian aid from the US pier off Gaza due to concerns regarding “the safety of our staff.”

“Well, right now, we’re paused because I’m concerned about the safety of our people after the incidents yesterday,” WFP Director Cindy McCain said in an interview with CBS News.

“Two of our warehouses, warehouse complex, were rocketed yesterday, so we’ve stepped back just for the moment to make sure that we’re on safe terms and on safe ground before we’ll restart. But the rest of the country is operational,” she added.

She said one of the organization’s workers was injured in the rocket attack that hit one of their locations.

She said she didn’t know how they were attacked when asked, noting that that was a “good question.”

In a statement, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) said it is working with other US government officials and humanitarian organizations in Gaza “to ensure that aid can be resumed safely and effectively after the security review currently being conducted by the humanitarian community is completed.”

It is worth mentioning that USAID works with the World Food Programme and its humanitarian partners in Gaza to distribute food and other aid from the US pier.
