Bahamas recognizes State of Palestine

BAHAMAS, May 08 (YPA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Bahamas has announced that the Council of Ministers decided to officially recognize the State of Palestine, which was welcomed by the Hamas movement, which called on all countries to support the justice of the Palestinian cause.

The Bahamas Cabinet said, “The Government of the Bahamas believes that recognition of the State of Palestine strongly demonstrates commitment to the principles set forth in the Charter of the United Nations and the right of peoples to self-determination as set out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

The Cabinet added that the Bahamas became an independent state in 1973 as an act of self-determination, and therefore, it supports the legal right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to freely determine their political status.

The Hamas movement welcomed the announcement and said in a press statement on Wednesday, “The decision serves the aspirations of our Palestinian people for liberation and independence, at a time when our people are being subjected to a systematic campaign of extermination and displacement at the hands of the criminal Zionist occupation army.”

The movement called on all countries to support the justice of the Palestinian cause, and to stand with our people and their right to freedom, independence, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital.

It is noteworthy that the government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago decided on the second of this month to officially recognize the State of Palestine.

Last April, Jamaica and Barbados also announced recognition of the State of Palestine.
