UN Special Rapporteur: Famine in Gaza becomes inevitable

GAZA, Jan. 30 (YPA) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, stated that famine has become inevitable in Gaza after some countries suspended funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).

“Halting support for UNRWA means leaving 2.2 million people under the threat of hunger. The countries that suspended their funding for the agency include the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, Britain, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Japan, and Austria,” Michael Fakhri said in a post on his X account.

UNRWA was established by a decision of the United Nations General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to refugees in its five operational areas: Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

The number of civilians killed since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7 has risen to 26,637, the majority of whom were children and women. In addition, at least 65387 people were injured and about 8,000 were reported missing.
