Antonio Guterres confirms binding nature of IJC’s rulings on “Israel”

WORLD, Jan. 27 (YPA) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, affirmed that the rulings issued by the International Court of Justice in the case of genocide brought by South Africa against “Israel” are binding on all parties.

According to a statement from the United Nations media office, Guterres pointed out that the court’s ruling demands that “Israel,” among other things, take all measures within its authority, in accordance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention, to prevent the commission of acts covered by Article 2 of the convention.

These acts include killing, causing serious physical or mental harm, deliberately imposing living conditions aimed at the destruction of the group, and implementing measures to prevent births.

Guterres emphasized that the court’s rulings bind “Israel” to immediately ensure “that its army does not commit any of these acts.”

He also noted the court’s confirmation that all parties to the conflict in the Gaza Strip are bound by international humanitarian law, and the court’s call for “the immediate and unconditional release of hostages kidnapped during the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, who remain detained by Hamas and other armed groups since then.”

Guterres reiterated that the court’s decisions are binding on all parties according to the court’s statute, and he trusts that all parties are committed to the court’s decisions.

According to the statement, Guterres will refer the decision of the provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice regarding “Israel” to the Security Council, based on the court’s statute.
