SHABWA, Dec. 24 (YPA) – A number of prisoners were injured on Sunday after being exposed to gunfire and tear gas bombs by prison guard forces in Shabwa province.
Local sources explained that clashes in the prison broke out against the backdrop of a decision issued by the leadership of the coalition-backed local authority in Shabwa to prevent the prisoners from using mobile phones, which prompted the prison inmates to carry out a state of protest, which the prison guards lost control, which exacerbated the situation after storming the prison and using excessive force against the prisoners.
The sources indicated that the decision of the authorities of Shabwa came against the backdrop of the escape of nine prisoners last Wednesday from the Central Prison in Ataq city, the provincial capital of Shabwa, which placed the leadership of the local authority under blame and question by the UAE forces that control the province.
A state of anxiety has been prevailed over the families of detainees in the prison, especially in light of the authorities’ secrecy about the conditions inside the prison and whether any deaths occurred as a result of the heavy gunfire on the prison inmates.
The sources added that the Saudi-led coalition forces have detained many of the people of Shabwa who oppose the coalition inside the Ataq Central Prison on charges of “terrorism.”
