SANAA, July. 06 (YPA) – The UN World Food Programme (WFP) announced it had to cut rations for more than 10 million Yemenis due to a lack of funding, warning that it might have to take additional steps.
Data distributed by the WFP showed that food imports to Hodeida ports have been decreased by 28% during the first five months of this year.
A recent report by the program warned of the need for close monitoring in the coming months, in light of the low levels of imports, saying that since the launch of the Black Sea Initiative, eight ships of Ukrainian wheat have arrived in Yemen.
The report stated that the program had to transfer more than 900,000 beneficiaries of cash-based assistance to in-kind aid, due to the severe and persistent funding shortage.
The program had announced that it had received a new contribution of over two and a half million dollars from the Australian government to support its activities in facing the food insecurity crisis in Yemen.
“The new contribution will enable the program to support some of the most food-insecure families in Yemen with food rations,” the report added.
