UN Security Council holds meeting to discuss peace efforts in Yemen

NEW YORK, June 12 (YPA) – The UN Security Council will hold its monthly meeting on Yemen to discuss military and humanitarian developments, in addition to the UN-led efforts to revive the stalled peace process in Yemen.

According to the Security Council’s program of work, the meeting will begin with a briefing session followed by closed consultations, accompanied with new briefings about developments in the country will be made by Hans Grundberg, the UN envoy for Yemen, and Major General Michael Beary, head of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeida Agreement (UNMHA).

It is expected that the briefing of the UN envoy would include his mediation efforts to establish an official ceasefire as a prelude to starting a UN-brokered comprehensive negotiated political process to achieve sustainable peace in the country.

Grundberg may also touch on his recent visit to Beijing and his meetings with Chinese officials, which he said come “in the context of working with the five permanent members of the Security Council to ensure coordinated international support towards lasting peace in Yemen.”

On Monday, the UN envoy will be in the Netherlands to participate in the Yemen International Forum 2023. Where he met with officials of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed the importance of developing a long-term Yemeni vision for peace to guide the international community in its support.
