US institute highlights conflicting agendas between ‘Saudi Arabia and UAE’ in Yemen

WORLD, May 23 (YPA) – The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) said that addressing the conflicting maritime interests of Saudi Arabia and the UAE is a key condition for ending the war in Yemen.

An analysis published by the institution confirmed that addressing issues related to the maritime stakes of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi is a condition for reaching a lasting peace agreement in relation to the ongoing conflict in Yemen since March 2015.

The study pointed out that the conflict of maritime priorities between the two main partners in the Saudi-led coalition resulted in strained relations between them but avoided a total rupture between them.

The analytical study talked about the UAE’s reorientation of its maritime strategy in Yemen by prioritizing its interests over the interests of its coalition partners.

The UAE’s main objectives were to control Yemen’s most important coasts and shipping lanes and to pursue a port chain strategy.

However, according to this reading, these steps have fueled the rivalry between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi because they have revealed their divergent interests in Yemen.

According to the analysis, naval targets were at the heart of the thinking of the Emiratis and Saudis when they became involved in the war on Yemen.

The study touched on the coalition’s adoption of the issue of secession in Yemen, because this will strengthen its influence over the ports of the southern Yemen.

The research institute concluded that despite the optimism of the ongoing negotiations between Sanaa and Riyadh, the efforts of the coalition powers to continue to expand their influence in coastal areas foreshadow a protracted conflict between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.

The areas of Yemen under the control of the coalition are witnessing many rounds of conflict between Saudi Arabia and the UAE through their local proxies, which have reached the armed conflict and the attempt of each group to remove the other.
