SOCOTRA, May 23 (YPA) – The Emirati influence in the Yemeni province of Socotra has exacerbated the climate impacts, according The British “IFL Science” website, which specializes in scientific documentation.
In a report, the British website talked about the threat to the Socotra archipelago, as a result of the UAE’s invasion and the imposition of political control due to continuing Saudi-led intervention in the war on Yemen in the year 2018, when the UAE deployed military forces in the archipelago.
The report described Socotra, historically known as part of Yemen, as the ideal paradise, in which it has witnessed in recent years its fall under the influence of the UAE, which faces charges of turning the archipelago into a permanent military site and a vacation resort.
According to the report, the Emiratis were trying to smuggle protected flora and fauna out of the island for their own nefarious purposes after the so-called UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council took control of the island in 2020.
It considered that Socotra, steeped in myths and exotic plant life, is among the most unique places on the planet, experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
The report reviewed the biological diversity of the unique archipelago, which includes many species not found anywhere else on the planet, noting that 37 percent of the 825 species of plants in Socotra, 90 percent of the kinds of reptiles, and 95 percent of wild snail species in Socotra are not found anywhere else in the world, according to UNESCO.
