US Senate votes to end Iraq war authorization

WORLD, March 30 (YPA) -The United States Senate has passed a bill that would repeal decades-old authorizations for use of military force in Iraq, a move by Congress to reassert its constitutional authority to declare war.

The bill passed on a 66-30 vote with strong bipartisan support, as it did in procedural votes this month that brought together an unusual coalition of lawmakers. As the final vote was announced in the chamber, senators on both sides of the aisle applauded.

Twenty years after the attack on Iraq, Congress wants to restore the authority to launch military action and restrict the powers of the president and the Pentagon, which have severely undermined the political power of the parliament over the past decades.

The move, which has the backing of the White House, still requires approval by the US House of Representatives.

If approved by the House of Representatives, the repeal of both laws would formally mark the end of the Iraq War, and Congress would regain its power to declare war.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he supported the move.
