Death toll from earthquake in south Turkey rises to 1,014
ANKARA, Feb. 06 (YPA)— The death toll from the earthquake that struck at dawn Monday in southern Turkey has risen to 1,014, in addition to the injuries of 2,323 people in several provinces, according to the Turkish authorities.
According to information released by the Disaster and Emergency Management Department, the 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurred at 04:17 local time. It reached a depth of 7 kilometers below the earth’s surface, causing massive destruction and human casualties.
A large number of buildings in 10 Turkish states collapsed as the earthquake struck Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Kahramanmaraş, Malatya, Diyarbakir, Adana, and other regions and states.
The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, went to the headquarters of the Emergency and Disaster Management Department to supervise the search and rescue operations related to the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.
