“Washington Post”: US military returns to Somalia

WASHNGTON, Dec. 10 (YPA) – The American newspaper “Washington Post” has revealed that U.S. forces have returned to Bedogley Air Base in Somalia to continue assisting local special forces in fighting al-Qaeda affiliates.

This decision comes after former US President Donald Trump withdrew almost the entire US military contingent from Somalia in 2020.

According to the newspaper, this decision led to the growth of “Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen” terrorist movement, and hindered the ability of the United States to provide intelligence data and air support to the Somali forces, and also led to a delay in building military facilities, such as clinics and training centers.

In 2021, the current US President, Joe Biden, agreed to the Pentagon’s proposal to return the US military to Somalia, as less than 500 US Special Forces soldiers will be deployed there, and they will be redirected from other points in the region.
