About 100 ‘Boko Haram, ISIS’ terrorist fighters drowned in Nigeria

WORLD, Sept. 06 (YPA) – About 100 terrorist fighters drowned in a river in northeastern Nigeria while trying to flee an army attack, security sources and eyewitnesses told AFP on Monday.

The sources said that last week the Nigerian army launched a land and air offensive to expel the terrorists from a number of villages along the Yazaram River.

The same sources added that after the attack, the terrorists tried to escape by swimming and threw themselves in the river, but many of them drowned.

The Yazaram River is located in Borno State, near the Sambisa Forest, the main hideout for the terrorists of both Boko Haram and ISIS in West Africa (ISWAP).

“More than 100 terrorists died on Thursday and Friday, most of them drowned while trying to cross the torrential river,” a senior army officer told AFP.

“Our soldiers eliminated the terrorists with air and ground attacks and forced them to flee their positions,” the officer added.

According to the same source, four Nigerian soldiers were killed in the attack.

For his part, Nigerian Defense Minister Bashir Salihi Magashi only told reporters on Monday that the army carried out large-scale ground and air operations against terrorists last week, without mentioning a specific outcome of these operations.
