Britain: Yemen war will only end with settlement

SANAA, Jul. 21 (YPA) – The British ambassador to Yemen, Richard Oppenheim, has stressed that “the 8-year-old war in Yemen will only end through a settlement.”

In statements to Saudi Arabia’s Asharq Al-Awsat, Oppenheim said, “Extending the UN truce in Yemen beyond August 2 is the clearest way for all parties to move away from the conflict and take steps to improve the lives of Yemenis.”

He added: “The truce in Yemen has led to tangible benefits for the Yemeni people.”

He noted that there has been a significant reduction in violence and civilian casualties, fuel has entered Hodeida and some civilian flights have resumed to and from Sanaa airport, stressing “now is the time to build on this progress.”

The British ambassador to Yemen urged “all parties to the Yemeni conflict to show flexibility and make decisions based on the interests of Yemenis who have suffered for too long.”
