15 killed in random bar shootings in South Africa

WORLD, Jul. 10 (YPA) – At least 15 people were killed and nine others injured on  Sunday in a mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg’s Soweto township, South Africa.

A group of men arrived in a minibus taxi and opened fire on some of the patrons at the bar late on Saturday night, South African police said in a statement.

“Shortly after midnight (local time), a group of men armed with rifles and pistols entered the place where the victims were sitting and started shooting indiscriminately at them,” the statement said, adding that police “launched a campaign to track down the perpetrators.”

South Africa is one of the world’s most violent countries with about 20,000 people murdered every year, one of the highest per-capita rate.
