SANAA, Jun. 12 (YPA) – Algeria deplored and rejected “hasty” EU comments after its decision to suspend a 20-year-old friendship treaty with Spain, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement
“European moves due to the dispute with Spain are suspicious and unacceptable,” the statement read.
This comes after Algeria suspended, last Wednesday, the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighborliness with Spain due to differences over the future of Western Sahara.
Spain radically modified its position on the sensitive issue of Western Sahara, to publicly support the Moroccan autonomy proposal, thus angering Algeria the main supporter of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and the Valley of Gold, “Polisario”.
“We hope to resolve the conflict with Algeria as quickly as possible, and through dialogue and diplomacy,” Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Alparis stressed, declaring that “the gas is flowing from Algeria, naturally.”
