SANAA, March 06 (YPA) – General Mark Milley, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff has ruled out the idea of establishing a no-fly zone in Ukraine because it would mean a clash with Russia.
The move came during his visit to Latvia on Friday
“We are here to reassure Latvia, the people of Latvia and the Latvian army that the United States is here to help them,” Milley told local media after visiting the Adazi military base near Riga, and some of the 1,400 US soldiers deployed there.
“The NATO Charter provides for deterring any regional aggression by Russia against another country, particularly one governed by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.”
He ruled out the idea of establishing a no-fly zone in Ukraine because it would require an “active fight” against Russian forces.
“We will have to fight the Russian Air Force… NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg or any senior political official from member states did not say they wanted to.”
“Today, I am not aware of any project to establish a no-fly zone.”
Ukraine has been demanding a no-fly zone in Ukraine for days, but NATO member states rejected the request to avoid getting involved in a conflict with Russia.
