Johnson calls for securing safety of nuclear power plants in Ukraine

SANAA, March 05 (YPA) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said his country believes nuclear power plants on Ukrainian soil must be guaranteed safety.

“I think it would be very important to have some kind of protection system for these power plants, a system that would allow international structures, such as the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to monitor the level of radioactivity on the ground,” Johnson was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph,

He expressed concern that the Chernobyl disaster could be repeated.

“There are other Ukrainian nuclear power plants. In Ukraine, of course, there are also many places where nuclear waste is stored, so we need to think about how to work together to prevent such a disaster.”

“We have to make it clear to the Kremlin that a nuclear disaster at a civilian facility in Ukraine, a new Chernobyl, would be a disaster for Russia and for all others,” he said.

On Friday evening, Johnson discussed the incident at the Zaporizhzhia power plant with French President Emmanuel Macron.
