Eight killed in Cameroon stadium stampede

YAOUNDE, Jan. 25 (YPA) – At least eight people were killed and dozens injured in a stampede in front of a football stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, ahead of an African Cup of Nations match on Monday evening.

“Eight deaths were recorded, for two women and four men, all in their 30s, as well as a child, and a body taken by family members,” the health ministry report said.

“A stampede at the entrance to an Olympic stadium” left “six dead and dozens injured”, state broadcaster CRTV said, noting that the Cameroonian government and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) were “following up on the situation of the wounded in the city’s hospitals.”

These events took place before the match between Cameroon and Comoros.

In this match, Cameroon reached the quarter-finals after winning 2-1.
