Britain warns of “Chinese spy” inside House of Commons

LONDON, Jan. 15 (YPA) – British intelligence services have warned of activities of a Chinese lawyer suspected of spying inside the British House of Commons for the ruling Communist Party in Beijing.

The Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, sent a letter to MPs based on a warning from MI5 about a Chinese lawyer, suspected of being a spy working for the Chinese Communist Party, to communicate and engage with MPs and political entities, according to the BBC.

According to the letter, entitled “Security warning against interference,” Chinese lawyer Christine Lee works in coordination with the Communist Party’s United Front administration, which “selects individuals and puts them in different positions, with the aim of promoting the party’s agenda.”

Electoral Commission data revealed donations from Christine Lee and her law firm, estimated at around £15 million to the Labour Party in Britain, since 2009.

“These donations were not only for the central party, but also for the party’s constituencies,” the data said, and the law firm donated £5,000 to the Liberal Democrats in 2013.

Separately, committee data showed Lee’s company had donated around £420,000 to Labour MP Barry Gardiner since 2015.
