KHARTOUM, Nov. 28 (YPA) – For the first time in many years, Washington upgraded its diplomatic representation with Sudan from Chargé d’Affairs to ambassador.
According to Sudan News Agency, the United States appointed John Godfrey as its ambassador to Khartoum.
Thus, Godfrey became the first US ambassador since 1996, after the diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed.
Godfrey has held several positions, including deputy head of the US mission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the United States Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna, as well as at his country’s embassies in Baghdad, Tripoli and Damascus, the Agency reported.
In May, Washington decided to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, thereby lifting restrictions on financial transactions with Sudan.
