US threatens Ethiopia’s authorities with sanctions

SANAA, Oct. 07 (YPA) – The United States has confirmed that it could impose sanctions on Ethiopian authorities in response to human rights violations in the country, which is ravaged by an ongoing military-political conflict in Tigray region, the US ambassador to the United Nations claimed.

“Today’s Security Council meeting to go directly to Ethiopia could be a move in itself,” Said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, at a press conference Wednesday evening, in response to a question. “This was not easy, but we were able to bring the Council together to discuss the situation in Ethiopia.”

“As you know, President Joe Biden signed an executive decree two weeks ago that gives us the possibility of imposing sanctions on people involved in human rights violations and obstructing humanitarian access.” This can be used if necessary.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday urged the Ethiopian government to allow the international organization to distribute humanitarian aid to millions of people in need in the north of the country “unhindered,” while UN officials spoke of deaths from hunger.
