Russia calls on US to get rid of its chemical arsenal

SANAA, Oct. 06 (YPA) – Russia has called on the United States to get rid of its chemical weapons, while affirming Moscow’s commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The Russian Embassy in Washington said in a statement Wednesday that Russia is committed to its chemical weapons agreements, signed in 2017, and has destroyed all its stockpiles of such weapons, noting that this is documented by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

In contrast, the US remains the only country in the world that has not done so and has not eliminated a large arsenal of chemical weapons, she said.

“We call on Washington to complete its chemical disarmament program as soon as possible and to meet international obligations to make the world safe from the possible use of this type of weapon,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy also denied accusations against Russia of using chemical weapons and poisoning activist Alexei Navalny, saying the allegations had been accompanied by a “violent propaganda campaign” since the early hours.
