Kais Saied: There will be no dictator in Tunisia

TUNISIA, Jul. 31 (YPA) – Tunisian President Kais Saied said on Friday that there will be no dictator in his country, after suspending the work of Parliament, lifting the immunity of lawmakers and controlling the ruling authorities.

According to a statement issued by the Tunisian presidency on Friday evening, the Tunisian president’s statements came during his meeting with journalists from the American newspaper “New York Times”.

Saied said during the meeting: “I wanted to meet with you today to refute all the rumors promoted by the media.”

He stressed that Tunisia, despite the crisis it is going through, is working to guarantee rights and freedoms, and that the decisions he issued were based on the country’s constitution.

Addressing journalists, he added, “If you find some difficulties in some regions or departments, they are not intentional, but they are measures to preserve your safety and the integrity of the Tunisian state.” He reiterated his emphasis on freedom of expression in the country.

He explained that those in the Parliament were the ones who tampered with the capabilities of the Tunisian state, and that his decisions came to protect the constitutional institutions.

The Tunisian president considered that anyone who talks about a violation of the constitution is a liar, stressing that he consulted the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament before implementing Chapter 80 of the constitution.
