FM meets UNICEF’s Regional Director in Sanaa
SANAA, May 25 (YPA) – Foreign Minister, Hisham Sharaf, on Wednesday met in Sanaa with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Ted Chaiban, and his accompanying delegation, which is currently visiting Yemen.
The meeting discussed the activities of UNICEF in Yemen.
At the meeting, Sharaf expressed the Salvation Government’s appreciation for UNICEF’s activities in helping children in Yemen, especially in light of the US-Saudi military aggression and the comprehensive siege for the seventh year in a row.
He pointed out that the humanitarian catastrophe created by the Saudi-led aggression coalition was not limited to malnutrition and acute shortage of basic foodstuffs, but included all areas of life, including the educational process.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that the continued prevention of entry of ships loaded with oil derivatives and the blockade has led to a quasi-stoppage of a number of hospitals and health centers, and the lack of medical diagnostic devices in most hospitals.
He indicated that the closure of Sanaa International Airport resulted in the death of many patients who needed to travel to receive treatment abroad, including children, in addition to the difficulties that have been placed in front of students and those who are practically trained from various scientific and professional disciplines due to the closure of the airport.
Sharaf called on UNICEF to intensify its efforts in support of the educational process, which is the basis for the development of societies, whether during the stage of aggression or after the aggression.
For his part, Chaiban considered UNICEF’s program in Yemen to be one of the largest in the world, noting that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is at the top of the Fund’s agenda and programs.
