US House of Representatives approves formation of committee to investigate Capitol events

SANAA, May 20 (YPA) – The US House of Representatives approved, on Wednesday, the formation of an independent committee to investigate the riots in the Capitol Building on January 6 when supporters of former President Donald Trump attacked it.

252 members of the House of Representatives supported the establishment of the committee against the opposition of 175 members, and the bill will now be referred to the Senate, according to Reuters.

The number of Republicans who supported the independent investigation, 35 out of 211 Republicans, indicated cracks in the party’s defense of Trump in a major vote.

Over the past two days, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have sought to abort the bipartisan bill to establish a commission to investigate the violence that left five people dead.
