ICRC: Remains of 68 soldiers missing during war between Iraq, Iran exchanged

GENEVA, April 09 (YPA) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced Thursday that Iraq and Iran have exchanged the remains of 68 soldiers who went missing during the 1980-1988 war between the two countries.

“Russia Today” TV channel quoted the committee in a press release as saying: “The remains of 5 Iraqis and 63 Iranians were returned to their country at the Shalamjah border crossing near the city of Basra in southern Iraq.”

The representatives of the Iraqi and Iranian authorities, as well as the ICRC, signed a certificate of handing over the remains, the channel added.

“More than 30 years have passed since the end of the conflict, and thousands of families on both sides are still ignorant of the fate of their loved ones. We will continue to support the two countries in providing answers to the families of those who are still missing,” the committee said.
