US State Department spokesman reveals steps to review designation of Ansarullah as a terrorist organization
SANAA, Jan. 23 (YPA) – A US State Department spokesman said on Friday that the ministry has begun reviewing the designation of Ansarullah group in Yemen as a terrorist organization and is working as quickly as possible to complete the process and make a decision.
President Joe Biden’s nominee for Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said this week that Washington would review the designation, which UN officials and aid groups fear will complicate efforts to contain the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
The spokesman said, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun reviewing the inclusion of Ansar Allah in the terrorist lists, as noted by the foreign minister appointed by Linkin, and we will not discuss or comment publicly on the internal deliberations of the review, but in light of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, we are working as soon as possible to complete the review and make a decision.”
The United Nations described Yemen as witnessing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, as 80 percent of its population needs aid.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and aid organizations warned against blacklisting the Houthis, a measure that was among the last decisions of the administration of former President Donald Trump.
