Head of Congressional Intelligence Committee calls for declassification of report on Khashoggi’s murder
SANAA, Jan. 23 (YPA) – The head of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, asked the Director of National Intelligence to declassify a report on the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
“Russia Today” channel reported that Avril Haynes, Biden’s candidate for the position of Director of National Intelligence, had pledged to declassify the intelligence report on the Khashoggi murder and present it to Congress.
He pointed out that this step came after US President Joe Biden pledged during his election campaign to reassess relations with Saudi Arabia, calling for more accountability for the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 … and calling for an end to US support for the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen.
The United States had imposed sanctions on 17 Saudis over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018, but many members of Congress accused the administration of former President Donald Trump of seeking to “protect” Saudi Arabia from accountability.
It is noteworthy that in 2019 Congress requested the Director of National Intelligence to reveal who ordered the killing of Khashoggi, but he refused to do so, insisting that the information must remain confidential .. Later on, Congress approved a legal amendment requiring the Trump administration to provide a full report on those responsible for the crime. Trump has not responded to this claim.
