Pentagon reduces its forces in Iraq, Afghanistan to 2,500 soldiers

SANAA, Jan. 16 (YPA) – Acting US Defense Secretary Christopher Charles Miller announced that the number of US forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan has now reached 2,500, pursuant to a decision by outgoing President Donald Trump.
Miller said, “Today, the United States is closer than ever to ending nearly twenty years of war.”
“The reduction in forces in Iraq reflects the increase in the capabilities of the Iraqi army,” he added.
The Pentagon action is likely to anger Republican and Democratic lawmakers opposed to further troop cuts, given renewed concerns about the outgoing Trump administration’s contempt for Congress.
