Turkey: Death toll from Izmir earthquake rises to 98

SANAA, Nov. 3 (YPA) – The death toll from last Friday’s earthquake in the west of the country, Izmir province, has risen to 98, Turkish authorities said.

“The earthquake killed 98 people and injured 994 others, adding that 847 of them had been discharged from hospitals, while 147 continued to receive the necessary health care,” the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Department said.

After the earthquake, 1,286 aftershocks were recorded, 43 of which had a magnitude of more than 4 degrees.

An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit the Aegean Sea last Friday, causing human and material losses in Turkey and Greece.

On Monday, rescuers managed to pull two surviving girls from the rubble of collapsed buildings in Turkey’s Izmir province, about three days after a powerful earthquake hit the country.
