One among five people suffer from mental health disorders in Yemen: UN

SANAA, Oct. 11 (YPA) – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Yemen announced on Saturday, that one among five Yemenis suffers from mental health disorders.

The statement said that “this number is likely to have increased due to the Corona pandemic, and nearly 6 years of the ongoing war on the country.”

The move came in a statement issued by the UNFPA, on the occasion of the World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10 each year.

“The percentage of psychiatrists for each population group is insufficient, and the matter was made worse when some few mental health services closed as a result of the Corona epidemic,” it added.

The fund called for the greater investment in the mental health this year, “as it is the most appropriate time for Yemen as humanitarian actors intend to cut funding.”

Earlier in the day, Media Officer at the United Nations Population Fund in Yemen, Fahimia Al-Fateh, told Anadolu Agency that the fund needs $ 9 million for the women’s protection program (medical, psychological and legal), and psychological support programs until the end of 2020.

“21 health centers specializing in psychological support or providing services would be closed,” Al-Fateh warred.
