SANAA, June 11 (YPA) – Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has called for the removal of 11 military statues and officials from the Confederate era as part of attempts to reduce anger in the American street against the backdrop of the killing of the black-skinned American George Floyd at the hands of the police.
The news agency “Agence France Presse” quoted Pelosi as saying in a message that the statues of men who called for brutality and barbarity to reach this explicit racist end constitute a heinous insult to the ideals of democracy and freedom, adding: “Their statues honor hate, not heritage .. must be removed.”
British activists have called within the global campaign against racism to remove a list of statues, streets and institutions bearing the names of racists and that includes the names of many well-known historical figures including the former British Prime Ministers William Gladstone and Robert Bell and two sailors and explorers James Cook and Francis Drake.
The killing of Floyd strangling last month led to protests across the United States and anti-violence and racism campaigns against the American police on social media sites and the demonstrators demanded reforms in the police and surveillance systems that they considered to be targeting excessively African people in addition to achieving justice in a case Floyd.
