Shura Speaker discusses with UN Representative latest developments in Yemen

SANAA, March 19 (YPA) – Speaker of the Shura Council Mohammed al-Aidarous on Wednesday discussed with the UN Resident Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Lise Grande the latest developments on the Yemeni arena.

The meeting dealt with the decisions of the Higher Ministerial Committee for Epidemics Control to face the Coronavirus pandemic, and the role of the UN organizations working in Yemen in supporting the efforts of the Committee and providing necessary requirements.

In the meeting, the Shura speaker affirmed the keenness of the Supreme Political Council to reach a just and honorable peace that achieves stability and independence for the Yemeni people.

Al-Aidarous pointed out that the other side was not committed to implementing the Stockholm Agreement, despite the Salvation Government’s implementation of its obligations in this regard, saying that this threatens peace efforts.

He indicated to the expected marine environmental catastrophe due to the possibility of a leakage in the “Safer oil floating tank” off the coast of Hodeidah, which carries more than one million barrels of crude oil and needs urgent maintenance work under the supervision of the United Nations.

In this regard, al-Aidarous called on the Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen and the international community, represented by the Security Council, to take urgent and binding measures to avoid the biggest environmental disaster threatening the region and the world.

He also called on the United Nations, the international community and all human rights and humanitarian organizations to put pressure on Saudi-led aggression coalition forces to immediately and unconditionally release oil derivatives ships and ensure that they are not held in future under any justification.

For her part, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen indicated that the suffering of the Yemenis and their humanitarian issues are receiving the attention of the United Nations.

“One of the priorities of the United Nations at the present time is working to find a quick solution to the humanitarian tragedy in Yemen, especially with regard to activating the mechanism for the continued entry of oil and gas derivatives, medicines and food aid,” Grande said.
