19 prisoners killed in riots in Honduras prison

SANAA, Dec. 23 (YPA) – At least 19 people were killed in riots in a prison in Honduras.

The German news agency DPA quoted local media as saying that the events took place in El Porvenir prison in the coastal city of La Ceiba.

According to the information obtained by the radio, it is believed that the violence is linked to tensions between the competing gangs.

Honduras declared last Tuesday a prison emergency in the wake of murders and other violent incidents in the country’s prisons.

Prisons in Honduras are overcrowded and famous for gang-related violence.
