Several injured in clashes between protesters in central Beirut

SANAA, Nov. 25 (YPA) – At least 10 people were injured in clashes between protesters in central Beirut early Monday, before security forces took control of the situation.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense of Lebanon said that after midnight, 10 wounded were taken to hospitals they were injured during protests in Riad al-Solh Square and Fouad Chehab Bridge (Ring) in Beirut.

Media reported earlier in the day that processions of youths on motorcycles had arrived at the Ring Bridge, amid tensions there between demonstrators who blocked the road and others refusing to cut it off.

Members of the Lebanese Army and riot police stood as a human barrier between youths and demonstrators and tried to separate the two sides.

Riot police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Security forces eventually managed to control the situation at the Ring Bridge, as demonstrators from both sides retreated while remaining on the street.

On the ground, protesters cut off a number of roads in various Lebanese areas, while the army began the process of opening the main roads leading to Beirut.

The protesters announced a general strike on Monday, and a number of schools in Lebanon decided to suspend their studies in order to keep students safe.
